Bushwick Beyond the Brand

Video: A transformation in pictures

By Nathan Place

Meryl Meisler taught art at a public middle school in Bushwick from 1981 to 1994. During that time, she took hundreds of photographs of the neighborhood. Starting May 31, an exhibit at the Living Gallery in Brooklyn will feature many of those photos, along with more Meisler has taken since 2007, giving us a vivid look at Bushwick’s past and present.

Thirty years ago 311 Menahan Street was my home. A place within an enclave where a rich diverse crowd of expansive cultures worked, went to school, and raised families. I have traveled quite extensively after leaving Bushwick, and have seen neighborhoods of different races. However, not one neighborhood has come close of displaying the camaraderie and interwoven closeness that I experienced as an inquisitive youngster. Thank you for this great video!
